Hyacinth is a delicate plant whose watering needs vary according to the stages of its growth. Here’s how to properly water your indoor potted hyacinth at each stage of its development:
- At Planting Time
During planting of hyacinth bulbs, make sure to moisten the soil well. Keep the pot in a dark, cool place to encourage rooting. Watering should be regular but moderate. Monitor the soil to prevent it from drying out or becoming too wet.
- During Active Growth
During bud formation and flowering, watering should be consistent but moderate. Again, avoid letting the soil dry out. It’s crucial to keep the area between the leaves and the top of the bulb free from water to preserve the plant’s health. During active growth period, the plant requires moderate but regular watering.
- At the End of Flowering
When flowering comes to an end, you can gradually start reducing watering. Initially, perform moderate watering while the leaves are still green. Once they begin to dry out, you can decrease the frequency and stop watering altogether after the flower has dried. After flowering, watering can be stopped.
Tips for Proper Watering
When watering potted hyacinths, pour water along the edges of the container, being careful to protect the bulb and rosette from water. Sometimes, when bulbs are too large and the operation cannot be easily performed, you can opt for bottom watering. This involves filling the pot saucer with a little water. However, it’s crucial to avoid water stagnation. Additionally, preferably use room temperature water. If you have rainwater available, even better!
