Transplanting Tomatoes in a Plastic Bottle

At the beginning of spring, approximately 2 weeks after sowing tomato plants, Hubert Fontaine shows you how to transplant them into an original support: a plastic bottle.

Summary:

Materials and Equipment: To transplant tomatoes into this mini greenhouse, you will need:

  • 1 plastic bottle that doesn’t roll
  • ½ liter of special seedling substrate
  • 5 tomato seedlings
  • ½ glass of water
  • 1 stake

How to Transplant Tomato Seedlings in a Bottle:

  1. Cut one side of the bottle.
  2. Place the extracted part at the bottom of the bottle to create drainage.
  3. Pour ½ glass of water into the bottom.
  4. Fill the bottle with seedling substrate and compact it slightly with the back of a spoon to distribute it evenly.
  5. With the help of a stake, make a 3 cm deep hole for each seedling.
  6. Extract the tomato seedlings planted in another bottle with a small spoon.
  7. Transplant the tomato seedlings by burying the roots and placing them straight.
  8. Compact lightly around the plant.
  9. Place your mini greenhouse in light, on the edge of a window or near a window, at a temperature of 18°C.

How to Care for Your Mini Greenhouse:

  • Keep the substrate slightly moist by pouring a few drops of room temperature water (minimum 20°C). It is better to see tomato plants wilted for a slight dry period than too wet.
  • Excess water favors the development of microscopic fungus (damping-off) that causes the collapse of tomato seedlings.
  • To stop decomposition, sprinkle the equivalent of a wooden ash or pellet cap between the plants.
  • When the plants are well developed, transplant them into a pot and always place them in light, at 18°C.
