Hey creative souls! Are you ready to transform those old, worn-out sweaters into something cozy and stylish? Today, I’m sharing a step-by-step guide on how to make your own slippers from recycled sweaters. Let’s get started!
Materials:
- Old sweater
- 2 pieces of felt (12″ x 8″ each, adjust size if needed)
Creating the Sole:
- Tracing and Cutting: Begin by tracing your foot on cardboard and adjusting the shape. Then, cut it out.
- Transferring to Felt: Trace the pattern onto the felt twice per piece, as we’ll need two pieces per slipper – one for the sole and one for the midsole.
- Cutting Sweater Pieces: Place the foot pattern on the sweater, leaving a 1 1/4 – 1 1/2″ margin from the bottom edge. Cut around the pattern.
- Attaching Felt: Use double-sided tape to attach the felt pieces to the sweater, then repeat on the back.
- Sewing: Sew around the edges with a sewing machine or by hand using contrasting thread.
Preparing the Insole:
- Cutting and Sewing Sleeves: Cut each sleeve 5″ from the bottom and sew the sleeve opening.
- Rounding the End: Round the other end of each sleeve. This will be the slipper’s insole.
Assembly:
- Position the Insole: Place the insole on the sole with right sides together, aligning the pointed area with the center top. Stitch together.
- Stitching Corners: Pull back the insole by 1″ and secure the left and right corners in place.
- Even Stitching: Sew all around, evenly distributing excess sole material.
- Turn and Make Slits: Turn right side out and make two slits on each side of the heel.
- Shape the Back: Fold sides to shape the slipper’s back, inserting the center flap into the bottom slit.
- Close the Back: Stitch two rows along the back, then straight across the bottom to close the slit.
Adding a Collar:
- Cutting the Collar: Cut around the bottom of the sweater, adjusting to about 2″ in height, and cut in half.
- Attach the Collar: Fold in half over the slipper’s top edge and secure in place with stitches.
Voila! Your cozy slippers made from recycled sweaters are ready to keep your toes warm and your style on point. Stay tuned for more creative ideas to breathe new life into your old favorites. Until then, happy sewing! 🧵✨
