Hey there, crafty souls! Are you ready to turn those old, holey sweaters into something snuggly and stylish? Today, I’m sharing a step-by-step guide on how to make your own upcycled sweater slippers. Let’s dive in!
Materials:
- Old sweater
- 2 pieces of 12″ x 8″ felt (adjust size if needed)
Creating The Footbed:
- Trace and Cut: Start by tracing your foot onto a manilla folder and clean up the shape. Then, cut it out.
- Transfer to Felt: Trace the pattern onto the felt twice per piece, as we’ll need two pieces per slipper – one for the sole and one for the midsole.
- Cut Sweater Pieces: Place the foot pattern onto the sweater, leaving 1 1/4 – 1 1/2″ allowance from the bottom edge. Cut out around the pattern.
- Attach Felt: Use double stick tape to stick the felt pieces onto the sweater, then repeat on the back side.
- Sew Together: Stitch around the edges using a sewing machine or hand stitching with a contrast color thread.
Preparing the Plug:
- Cut and Stitch Sleeves: Cut off each sleeve 5″ from the bottom and stitch the sleeve opening shut.
- Round the End: Round the other end of each sleeve. This will be the plug for the slipper.
Sewing It Up:
- Position the Plug: Place the plug over the footbed with good sides together, aligning the pointed area with the center top. Tack stitch together.
- Tack Stitch Corners: Pull the plug back 1″ and tack stitch the left and right corners onto that place.
- Even Stitches: Stitch all around, distributing excess material from the footbed evenly.
- Flip and Snip: Flip right side out and make two snips on either side of the heel.
- Form the Back: Fold the side pieces to form the back of the slipper, inserting the center flap into the slit at the bottom.
- Close Back: Sew two rows of stitches up the back, then sew straight across the bottom to close the slit.
Adding A Collar:
- Cut Collar: Cut around the bottom of the sweater, trim to about 2″ high, and cut in half.
- Attach Collar: Fold in half around the top edge of the slipper and tack stitch in place.
And voila! Your cozy upcycled sweater slippers are ready to keep your toes warm and your style on point. Stay tuned for more creative ideas to breathe new life into old favorites. Until next time, happy crafting! 🧵✨
