How to Sew Easy Baskets with 10″ Squares – Layer Cake Leftover Project!

Introduction: If you’re a beginner in sewing and looking for a practical project to utilize your leftover fabrics, this easy fabric basket pattern is just for you! Designed to be made with 10″ layer cake squares, these baskets are quick, reversible, and perfect for organizing your home or giving as gifts.

Materials Needed:

  • 4 squares of fabric, each measuring 10” x 10”
  • 1/3 yard of medium weight fusible interfacing (such as HeatnBond Fusible Fleece)
  • Coordinating thread
  • Additional cutting: 2 squares of fusible fleece or other fusible interfacing, each measuring 10” x 10”

Preparation:

  1. Pair your fabrics into sets, with two fabrics designated for the basket’s interior and two for the exterior (keeping in mind that the basket will be reversible). Fuse interfacing to the wrong side of one pair of fabrics.
  2. Place the pairs of fabrics right sides together and cut out 2 1/2” squares from the bottom corners of each set.

Sewing:

  1. With a 1/4” seam allowance, pin and sew along the side and bottom edges of each pair of fabrics, leaving the cut out corners unsewn.
  2. Press the seams open and re-press the top edge of each basket piece to the wrong side by 1/2”.
  3. Flatten one side of the basket against the bottom with the seams lined up, pinning the bottom corners together. Sew across the corner seams to create the basket’s bottom corners.
  4. Repeat the process for both basket pieces.
  5. Attach the lining and exterior by sewing the bottom corner seams together on each side.
  6. Pull the lining up and around the exterior of the basket, lining up and pinning the top edges together, matching the side seams.
  7. Sew around the top edge of the basket, either using a free arm or sewing around the inside top edge.

Conclusion: Congratulations, you’ve completed your easy fabric basket! These versatile bins are perfect for keeping your sewing table or desk tidy, and since they’re reversible, you can switch up the look anytime.
