Materials Needed:
- Absorbent fabric (such as microfiber, terry cloth, or cotton towel fabric)
- Decorative fabric (optional, for the border)
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Fabric scissors
- Pins
- Measuring tape
- Rotary cutter and cutting mat (optional but helpful)
- Iron and ironing board
Instructions:
- Measure and Cut the Fabric:
- Determine the desired size for your doggy drying towel. A common size is around 30 inches by 20 inches, but you can adjust according to your preference and the size of your dog.
- Use fabric scissors or a rotary cutter and cutting mat to cut your absorbent fabric to the desired size. If you’re adding a decorative border, cut the decorative fabric into strips to fit around the edges of the towel.
- Prepare the Decorative Border (Optional):
- If you’re adding a decorative border, fold the strips of decorative fabric in half lengthwise with the right sides facing out. Press with an iron to create a crisp fold.
- Attach the Border (Optional):
- Pin the folded decorative fabric strips along the edges of the absorbent fabric, aligning the raw edges. The folded edge of the decorative fabric should be facing towards the center of the towel.
- Sew the border in place using a straight stitch, ensuring to backstitch at the beginning and end to secure the stitches.
- Fold and Pin the Towel:
- Fold the edges of the absorbent fabric over twice (about 1/2 inch each fold) to create a clean hem. Pin the folded edges in place.
- Sew the Hem:
- Using a straight stitch, sew along the folded edges of the towel to secure the hem. Remember to backstitch at the beginning and end of your stitching to reinforce the seams.
- Add a Hanging Loop (Optional):
- Cut a small strip of fabric (about 4-5 inches long and 1-2 inches wide).
- Fold the strip in half lengthwise with the right sides facing out and press with an iron.
- Fold each end of the strip towards the center fold and press again.
- Sew along the open edge of the strip to secure the folds.
- Attach the loop to one corner of the towel by folding it in half and sewing it into the seam as you sew around the edges of the towel.
- Finish and Inspect:
- Trim any loose threads and inspect the towel to ensure all seams are secure.
Your doggy drying towel is now ready to use! Simply hang it in a convenient location, such as near your dog’s bathing area, for easy access after bath time.
