MATERIALS NEEDED • 2 men’s cotton shirts in similar colors, preferably the same size (I used 1 plaid, 1 striped) • 1/2 yard of contrasting floral fabric • scissors • ruler and fabric marker • sewing machine and matching thread
TRANSFORMATION HACK DIRECTIONS FOR MEN’S SHIRT
Remove the back of the shirt by cutting 1/2″ from the armhole, yoke, and side seams while leaving the seams intact.
Use the piece you just removed as a pattern to cut the contrasting floral fabric, adding 1/2″ to the top and side seams. Cut the floral hem slightly shorter than the original piece, to your natural waistline.
Cut the second shirt under the armholes, through the front button placket, and remove the back.
Pin the upper edges of the floral fabric to the seam allowance just below the yoke. Stitch in place with a 1/2″ seam.
Stitch the sides of the floral fabric to the back armhole, underarm, and side of the shirt. Break the seams at the upper corner as you sew and trim the fabric if necessary to achieve a square shoulder seam.
Stitch the top of the striped fabric to the floral fabric, placing the button placket in the center back as indicated above. Sew the side seams and press.
Finally, finish the side seams of the shirt panels with a 1/4″ rolled hem.
I love the finished product and I’m so glad I decided to try this shirt hack—it’s so easy!
