Today, I’m thrilled to share with you a step-by-step sewing tutorial on how to make a pet blanket. This project is perfect for protecting your furniture from pet hair and providing your furry friend with cozy warmth during the cold winter months. Plus, it makes a thoughtful gift for friends and family who love pets.
Before diving into the tutorial, here’s a quick note: I’ll be using the metric system for measurements, but I’ll provide conversions to inches to simplify things for everyone. Feel free to adjust the measurements and techniques to suit your preferences and creativity!
Materials:
For this project, you’ll need:
- Fabric for the front of the blanket (loneta fabric): 83cm x 83cm
- Fabric for the back of the blanket (polar fleece): 83cm x 83cm
- Plate: 22.5cm in diameter
- Needle size: 90/14
- Scissors
- Wonder Clips
- Quilting Ruler
- Rotary Cutter
- Cutting Mat
- Corner and Edge Shaper
- Sewing Thread
- Seam Ripper
- Heat Erasable Pens
- Sewing Pins
- Measuring Tape
- Sewing Machine
Seam Allowance:
- 1.5cm for piecing the blanket pieces together
- 1cm for zigzag stitching finishes
Step 1: Sew the Front and Back Pieces Together
Place the right sides of the fabrics together and align the raw edges. Sew with a seam allowance of 1.5cm, leaving an opening of 15cm to turn the blanket right side out.
Step 2: Sew the Rounded Corners
Use a plate to trace the rounded corners with a heat erasable pen. Sew along the traced lines, trim the excess fabric, and clip the curves. Press the seams open.
Step 3: Turn the Blanket Right Side Out
Turn the blanket right side out through the opening.
Step 4: Close the Seam Opening
Hand sew the seam opening closed invisibly.
Step 5: Finish the Blanket With a Zigzag Stitch
Press the loneta side of the blanket (not the polar fleece side). Set your sewing machine to a zigzag stitch with a wider width and length. Stitch all around with a seam allowance of 1cm.
Step 6: Finished Pet Throw Blanket
And there you have it! Your pet throw blanket is finished and ready to keep your furry friend warm and cozy.
Happy sewing! 🥰🪡
